Marketing mail is a significant (maybe 25%) portion of the USPS revenue and very profitable. They have a strong disincentive to reduce the stream of junk mail going to your home.
That would be nice. However, the postal service is required to deliver your mail, and they make money by doing so. They have no interest in reducing mail and in fact have been advertising their “Every Door Direct Mail” service which is nearly impossible to opt out of. Look for “EDDM” label on mail and you’ll see what I mean.
USPS is complicit in delivering junk mail, so it's fair game.
similarly, if junk physical mail had to pay proper postage, i imagine it would vanish.
I am surprised the people sending me physical junk mail haven’t lobbied the post office to provide all their customers with email boxes along with physical mail boxes and then stuff then with junk email along with important governmental notices only going through post office email boxes that have tiny storage quotas so you have to manually delete all the junk email, otherwise they will stop delivering the email that you actually care about and refreshing the junk email...
Physical mail delivery exists. What's the point of email?
In a world where we pay for stamps, why didn't bulk unsolicited mail go away? This won't work.
5/10 junk mail in paper form! My God, such a waste... No way to stop that?
In a world where we pay for stamps, why didn't bulk unsolicited mail go away? Why would it work for telephones?
Except I can choose to not visit an ad supported website, yet I cannot stop getting postal mail. I get literally zero benefit from postal mail deliveries (it's all, 100%, junk) and am forced to pay serious money every month to drop off ~30lbs of postal mail at my town's recycling center. Whatever service they claim to provide would be better done by UPS and FedEx for a lower overall cost to the recipient. Let the junk mailers all go out of business.
