Why couldn't you switch to Github or an alternative? You seem to be implying GitLab has something unique that make those others non viable.
The Only reason for sticking with GitHub is UX. gitlab is expanding in all directions may be they will catch up.

Gitlab is a fully featured and ready full replacement for Github. Additionally, the Gitlab team is far more competent and listens better to user feedback.

What are the competitive alternatives to GitHub for an average programmer? I feel very locked in by the amount of content and ease of use.
Gitlab is hardly better than Github. I'd suggest source hut, or cgit and host your own.
Unless you trust the GitLab team to be better than Microsoft owned GitHub
Github is not a competitor to Gitlab, they offer some similar services but overall it is not the same value proposition
