Why couldn't you switch to Github or an alternative? You seem to be implying GitLab has something unique that make those others non viable.

The Only reason for sticking with GitHub is UX. gitlab is expanding in all directions may be they will catch up.

are you joking? it's the other way around. github is only just now playing catch up to gitlab

Wonder why they did not pick GitLab since it is significantly better for FOSS ideals and has the same niceness of GitHub

Gitlab is a fully featured and ready full replacement for Github. Additionally, the Gitlab team is far more competent and listens better to user feedback.

Better than GitHub, not better than Gitlab, tbh

What are the competitive alternatives to GitHub for an average programmer? I feel very locked in by the amount of content and ease of use.

Gitlab is hardly better than Github. I'd suggest source hut, or cgit and host your own.

vokep Aug 8, 2019 View on HN

Unless you trust the GitLab team to be better than Microsoft owned GitHub

Github is not a competitor to Gitlab, they offer some similar services but overall it is not the same value proposition
