Discussions center on consumers' rights to install and run any software on purchased hardware, opposing manufacturer restrictions like remote bricking, crippling, or exclusive software locks, and advocating for laws to make such practices illegal.

it oughta be illegal that we can't run the software we want and the software we write on the devices we buy.

Is it still in warranty? Can you roll it back? Crippling a device after it has been purchased ought to be illegal.

too restrictive for whom ? as a potential user of your software, can I have the guarantee that if I buy a device with your software on it, I can replace it / fix it ?

Can't we just own our hardware AND have consumer protections?

rolph Jul 15, 2025 View on HN

it is time for a regulation forbidding the practice of reaching into your hardware and modifying, without your consent.

It's legal for them to disable the software but not for them to prevent the user from using the hardware. It depends on how literal the "bricking" really is but if they made it impossible to load up (say) cyanogenmod then they could be up for a big destruction of property lawsuit.

Ppl like good hardware and sw support but want more freedom, why not allow this? I hope for a similar law for other systems like smartwatches, infotainment systems, etc

Not just iDevices, but any device that can not be fully controlled by the owner. Hardware should only be allowed to be sold if we are free to install/reinstall the software as we see fit.

no one should be allowed to pay thier way to exclusive installs on new hardwares.no one should be allowed to lie, imply there is danger or crime, pay to enforce firmware based or chip/die based exclusory mechanisms.there must be liability for destruction, modification or snooping of data or owner activities, unless explicitly initiated by owner void of coercion.

This practice should simply be illegal or at least make the manufacturer liable for a full refund plus interest. We shouldn't let manufacturers brick devices that we own.
