Not putting a dot after the www in your domain name seems weird :)
www.example.com and example.com don't necessarily resolve to the same place.
www is dropped from the url, so I don't believe that's the case
It's not just www: now m.foo.com and www.foo.com look identical, for example.
Some browsers hide the www from the URL (even if it's actually there,) so I think customers notice it less.
