Flights get cancelled all of the time though. That should be built in.

Sure, but then what? In this case, the answer is "of course not, but if you want to go home on our airline, you talk to us first". Not everyone can eat the cost and disruption of a second (urgent!) ticket, and they know that.
Scary.. Did the airline comp you for that?
They probably screwed up something. Or a different flight was canceled.
Or don't book such a flight in the first place. I guess you can get unlucky and have it changed on you.
