My central heater is a simple on/off model. Nest will work offline with it but afaik you can't write target temperatures to it then.

Why did you choose an internet-connected thermostat?

I had a Nest and sold it to my brother after Google bought them and it was clear they were never going to release the rumored remote sensors. I got an ecobee instead. The ecobee is much smarter, mostly because of the remote sensors. My house is far more comfortable. It's also nice that ecobee has an API and IFTTT support. It has no issues running normally when the internet goes down. (My internet was down completely the other night and there was -25F windchill. It followed schedule just f

Your thermostat should not require internet. Fact.

Does a simple analog Honeywell thermostat not do that?

kalcode Dec 6, 2017 View on HN

That already exists, here is a widely recommended version.https://nest.com/thermostats/nest-learning-thermostat/overvi...

I had Hive before and prefer that; being able to boost the heating to a certain temperature for 30/60/120 mins is a common use case for me that Nest doesn't do.

I wish they could solve the basic use case of "Let me set a temperature and thermostat keeps the house at that temperature." I tried several versions of Nest, and they all inevitably decided on their own that they were smarter than me and generated some weird schedule despite my never commanding them to operate on a schedule. I just want my thermostat to hold whatever temperature I set it at, until I set it at another temperature. This shouldn't take AI wizardry to achieve.

I got a Honeywell Sensi thermostat that can do that, and also works without an internet connection. Better things are possible.

So I had a Nest for a year before it just stopped working and Nest told me it wasn't compatible with my system, after previously telling me it was (not sure how it worked more or less perfectly for that first year but whatever). I moved to an EcoBee and I'm happy with it but for all their "smarts" these things are still dumb as rock in my opinion.I work from home so turning up/down the temp when I'm away is rarely worth it other than when I'm on vacation for
