Holy jeezus, I was worried I was flexing by mentioning my $200/hr rate. Dude or dudette, if you feel that’s realistic, the half Jew side of me is rooting for you. Godspeed.$1,000/hr, what the fuck. I don’t think I’ve dropped a legit WTF on HN before. That’s a 40hr a week rate for at least a month, right? Otherwise you’re probably using the wrong comparison to what you want. But still… sure wouldn’t take many hours at that level. What do they do?
Your value isn't just the code you write. One of the biggest benefits you have (presumably) is that they can easily communicate with you and might even be able to meet in person. Frequent communication and the ability to manage expectations is why you can justify $100/hr or more. You're not just providing them with code; you're providing them with confidence that you are a low-risk option.
Is it really that easy to charge $50-75/hr without being recognized as a decent developer?
its not about /hour charge, its about the work. The work is getting done, it may take 2 hours or 6 hours. People will pay you, if you are really good at some type of development. Have a portfolio to show. Sartups are heavily funded and want to spend money, they will get tax deduction for paying freelancers, so target startups and show your work, you will get paid high bucks, startups want the work done now and are ready to pay the VC money and they know they will be getting results as expected f
The poster has claimed to make $150/hour on a freelance basis. [1] So this pricing is not out of line with that as a reference.[1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8460101
For freelance / C2C, remote5-7 years of exp - $75+ an hourI've been slowly going up from that, currently at $135 an hour. Wanting to hit $150 next.
25 usd / hour? More like 10 usd, at least in the UK
I've worked as a Software consultant for a small company known for quality work and I can confirm your numbers. I've been billed for up to 230$/h, however this is Switzerland - on US price levels it should add up with your calculation pretty well.
A freelance developer can easily ask $250/hour, similar for a contract agency, and that is kind of a low amount. It sounds like a lot for a single developer but if one considers all of the non-billed time of chasing leads and bills it's maybe a different picture.
If you know what you're doing, I'd say you should stay around 100 USD/hour -- anything else sounds very low?
