My experience matches those of others in this thread. I barely read anymore and find it difficul to focus. Largely, my tastes have calcified and narrowed quite a lot. I used to be an adventurous reader and always tried random books I saw on the library shelves, but these days I find it difficult to get into something new, and if I do read a book I've probably read it before.I think if I just start reading it'll come back to me. Starting is the hard part. So like you I may as well st
Try reading books, i'm always happy when i finish one, starting is the difficult part.
I read 1-3 hours a day. Usually 1-2 hours reading on my Kindle before bed. Then another hour or so via audiobook while walking, doing chores, in the car etc...But sometimes I will go through a slump, then see a book that really looks interesting and get into it.Don't feel bad about starting a book and then not finishing it. Life's too short to read books you're not into.
> A book is a somewhat large time investment. Often it is worth it but often it isn't.But everyone has time for reddit/hn/facebook. Sometimes for hours at a day. :}I posit that the real problem is that books (especially fiction novels) are engaging but not hypnotic. It's easy to scroll HN because it's literally hypnotic and thus no thinking required. That's why they're called newsFEEDs. You're being spoon-fed news. But books demand that you think,
My personal experience: I no longer get absorbed for hours reading a book, as was the case when I was younger. The free time available is no excuse, because I spend a lot of time in HN and the like. Before, reading was almost inevitable, I did need to make an effort to put the books apart, nowadays I need a lot of will to put away the phone to grab the same books that I adored some years ago.
That sounds lovely!I used to read a lot. Now I just skim pointless internet things. I need to break that bad habit. I've a pile of book "to read some day". I think I'll start tonight. (I hope.)
Is your goal to read more books? If it is, then here are my two advices:1. Don't try to remember every details of the books. Just cruising through will update your mental model of the world and your brain will assimilate concepts that are relevant to you at that point in time. Also, great books are meant to be read multiple times so don't fall the fear of missing out.2. If you aren't naturally devouring the book out of curiosity, chances are that the book simply isn'
Dear Downvoter,I'm not sure whether it requires more concentration, but it may very well be that like you know, some people read well and it's nothing for them to read a book a day. And other people this is a big deal. I mean it's a struggle, and what's likely is going on is that most people never learn to read very well. And so, the amount of concentration they have to put into the mechanics is what's defeats them with the amount of material that has to be read.<a
I say this is bogus, anyone can still read a book that is interesting. The problem is that most people are not exposed to interesting books anymore, since most books published in the last few years are undeserving of attention. I tell this for personal experience, when I find a book that grabs my attention I can spend several hours reading, but most books don't even deserve 15 min. My strategy is to spend more time researching things that I like and really want to read.
Sorry that's not the truth, I read about a book a week. This week I've read 3 and started another 2. The secret is to read for enjoyment, a lot, and eventually you get fast. If it feels like a chore, you're not reading the right books: read something else. If you're enjoying it, it's easy to get carried away and read for many hours at a time.
