Didn't Myspace have a similar story?

Facebook experiences its MySpace moment

I had a MySpace account before I had a Facebook account. When I first joined MySpace a lot of my friends were on the site but soon after a lot of them started to leave and move over to Facebook. MySpace allowed users too much freedom to design and customize their pages which resulted in a horrible user experience for most users, while Facebook offered users a more clean design and professional experience.

MySpace had 20-30x the number of users that Facebook did not so long ago.

Wasn't that MySpace? Facebook superseded that model because the general public prefers Facebook.

People were invested in Myspace with updates, photos, page customizations, etc. Now they're all on Facebook. There's no reason to believe they won't move again if the right feature set comes along.

MySpace was a stepping stone from GeoCities to Facebook.
