Brexit could actually work out well for a more united EU. The UK has always been one of the biggest opponents of further European integration. Without the UK, it might actually happen.

The EU (minus Britain) are united. Its just Britain that cant agree with itself.

You think the UK will stay on the EU? Explain

The European Union wants to maintain centralized power. A Country like the UK leaving weakens their authority. Meanwhile the uk wants to remain sovereign, but doesn't want to lose the benefits of the EU. Its essentially a power play. Freedom is the better choice imo

Why EU in name? UK just decided to stay out.

UK had special conditions and various exceptions while it was part of the EU. If they would like to rejoin (and doubt that would happen soon, the polls show there are at least some people thinking it was good, and lots of undecided ones) the rest of the EU would not want to give them the same special conditions.Maybe after one generation things will change but for some time I think not much will change on this topic.

At a guess because during the referendum for Scottish independence from the UK the line was 'stay because otherwise you'll not be in the EU anymore'. So for the Scots to find themselves out of the EU now by force is probably not what they wanted to wake up to.

I wonder if it would make more sense to instead of having the UK leave the EU, have England and Wales leave the UK with the UK (Scotland, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar) remaining in the EU.That would certainly seem fairer to the Scots, who rejected their independence vote largely because they weren't sure that they would be able to remain in the EU if they left the UK.

anti EU much? timely reminder.... the UK is deciding to leave the EU.. the EU is not forcing them out. The EU will look after their interests. Britain cannot obviously expect to have cake and eat it, as much as they might want that.

Leaving the EU is a problem. It is not in the EU's interest to let the UK have all the benefits of being a member without actually being a member.
