Sounds like USB-C hubs / docking stations will make your life a lot easier in the long run.

I can easily plug any USB device into my MacBook with a cable. I cannot however plug a firewire, thunderbolt or HDMI cable into a USB-A port. Yes I need to purchase different cables, but they are relatively cheap compared to something like a laptop docking station that I might need otherwise.

Try a Henge dock. Been using one for 6 years. No monitor or thunderbolt issues.

As much as people complain about USB-C, I absolutely love it. I have a 2018 MacBook Pro, and I use the Caldigit TS3 hub (referenced in the article) as my docking station at work. I plug a single cable in, and I immediately have 2 x 27" 4k monitors, power, USB peripherals, headphones, Ethernet, and much more if I need it.I travel with a single dongle that cost $15: SD card, HDMI, 2xUSB 2.I have not had to buy any extra cables, besides what came with the computer.

i have 4 usb-c on my macbook of that one i used for a usb-c to displayport to connect to my 4k monitor and the other is used for a dongle, i dont know what this guy is talking about, to be honest i would love to have one regular usb to not to have to carry the adapter or dongles everywhere.

They are already pretty widespread, but expensive for now. I have to regularly use at work a Dell XPS 13, a macbook and a Lenogo Yoga. The monitor I use is an HP Z27 with a built in dock, where I have a keyboard and mouse connected. Whenever I have to switch a laptop, I just unplug the usb-c cable of the monitor from the laptop I am using and plug it to the new one. It takes a couple of seconds and I have my full setup usable again. The best thing is that it also provides power to the laptops, s

I don't understand the paragraph about the dock. Both laptops use usb-c, there shouldn't be a reason the 60$ dock doesn't work.

I don't get it either. I dock my MacBook and my monitor supports USB-C which also provides power and a bunch of other standard USB connections. I don't even really need a dongle anymore.

My Macbook Pro has 4 USB-Cs and I have a dongle for ethernet (which is rare). If I'm using my external monitor I bought a DisplayPort to Thunderbolt/USB-C cable. If I'm out and about and need HDMI, I have another dongle (but that's no different to my previous Mac which needed a dongle for HDMI as well)

USB-C hubs nicely solve the problem of plugging USB devices, a monitor and a charger into a laptop. Like the docking stations in old laptops, but far cheaper. If you have multiple 4K screens or very high speed I/O devices you may need Thunderbolt, but for most people USB-C is fine.
