Give Alacritty [1] a try. I am very happy with its performance, it just feels fast and solid. The difference in latency is really noticeable to me compared to iTerm2 or Terminal.app. Alacritty just feels significantly faster.[1] https://github.com/jwilm/alacrittyDisclaimer: I am not associated with the project in any way. Just a fan.
I was on iTerm2 for a pretty loong time. You should try out Ghostty.
Probably has better keyboard and lower latency than iTerm2.
Have you tried 'wezTerm'?
Have you tried Kitty? It blows iTerm2 and Terminal.app out of the water in performance. It's also feature rich, if you have wild terminal feature needs. I'm mostly in it for the speed, though.
I use iTerm. There are alternatives that are faster, like Alacritty, but iTerm has a ton of features. It's hard to beat.
I've spent at least 6+ straight months on iTerm2 3.x, kitty, and Alacritty (my current primary terminal), and briefly tried Terminal. Terminal is waaay faster. The only thing that's stopping me from using it as my primary terminal is the poor colour support and poor split window support (and setting shortcuts to go between them).
To people who tried using it, what are the reasons to use it over iTerm2?
I’ve tried xterm, terminator, termite, urxvt, st, kitty, and gnome-terminal but Alacritty is my go to because of it’s speed and simplicity. Alacritty has no menus, no tabs, no scroll bars, and configuration is done via a single config file. I pair it with tmux. The only minor thing I wished Alacritty would support is font ligatures.
iTerm2 remains a better program in my opinion. Try it sometime! (and it's free!)
