The cluster discusses how cars, motorcycles, and modified vehicles are the main sources of noise pollution in cities, debating engine noise versus tire noise, the quietness of electric vehicles, safety concerns, and calls for stricter regulations on loud exhausts.

A lot of the sound of cars are them moving over the road, not the engine noise. Electric wouldn't help.

this is why EV's can't come soon enough, I live near a street and tire sound is pretty loud but it's the Harleys, oversized pickups, and fart can compacts that took some getting used to.

Electric cars still make noise.

I think part of the problem is that car manufacturers do an extremely good job of reducing noise inside the car. When I'm driving my car, I scarcely hear the noise around me. If I'm running alongside the same street, though, I need noise-cancelling headphones just to hear a podcast. As long as manufacturers can limit the effects of the noise on the driver, there is little incentive for them to limit the noise to the environment in general.

This is wonderful.I wish they did the same about modifications done to increase the noise.I've got 2 people living nearby that both have straight-piped their car and I literally cover my ears when they pass by.My Watch literally tells me that a noise peak happened when they drive by.

i wonder if it helps that cars make less of a noise in an urban environment these days (especially electric/dual ones)

A revving engine would be less disruptive. It's a noise that most of us filter out, except those in situations which make them on alert for oncoming traffic, e.g. pedestrians and cyclists.

Significantly quieter than car traffic noise. Struggling to see the issue here.

This is great. Noise pollution really is a massive blind spot in vehicle regulations. Even combustion-powered cars can be made pretty quiet, but morons associate "loud" with "fast", so manufacturers keep installing defeat devices in the mufflers. Motorcycles are even worse. The noise measurements are apparently made under completely unrealistic operating conditions, and on the road they are many times louder than most cars.
