The iPhone 7 (an excellent phone that I own and use daily) is prominently displayed on their iPhone page. It starts at $449 up front or $18.70/month. That is affordable to many people in the developed world. Doubly so when you consider that a phone is probably the most-used single object that most people own.

Its a 600$+ phone! 200$ and then, during your contract time, you pay the rest.

You're paying for iOS, the phone is free.

It seems likely they only appear that way because the initial cost is amortized into the contract for most people in the US. An iPhone 7 is around $700! And flagship android phones are up there too. I guess people have a lot of disposable income or just see the sign-up price?

You paid with the agreement; it’s factored into the plan prices. Yes, you can get similar deals with carriers for an iPhone.

That is paying for the iPhone, if you go with monthly-prepaid you can get a good plan for $30/mo or $40/mo

You're right, the price is crucial. It's silly to compare it to an iPhone which costs hundreds of dollars unlocked.

You might want to explain the true cost of an iPhone to them.

Is there a reason not to buy a subsidized phone and just eat the termination fee immediately? (I'm assuming it's ~$200, but might be different for smartphones)

You can buy an iPhone 14 Pro Max for $46/month. You can buy an iPhone SE for $18/month - both from Apple interest free.No one is impressed by a device that over 300 million people buy a year or that you spent $46/month instead of $18/month.
