AI magic I guess. I'm just a hobbyist but it's given some good results for me with whatever i've thrown at it. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing out on with Lightroom but Darktable is more than good enough for my use case!

Have you tried darktable? It's definitely not Lightroom, but it's getting better and better all the time.

Adobe Lightroom, you mean. I have used Darktable and would recommend it, it is a great piece of software.

From your tone, I'm assuming you've tried and discounted Lightroom already?

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned DarkTable yet. I guess more HNers just use the default Apple programs than I thought. I didn't realize anyone would even miss Aperture.

Frustrating that Photos is really not suitable for anything other than editing snaps. I'd love to ditch Adobe, but Darktable doesn't support Fuji raws, and there really aren't that many great commercial alternatives to Lightroom that don't also have a subscription model.
