Why don't folks just use Matrix protocol?
Any reason to not use the Matrix protocol underneath?
What do you bring to the game now that Matrix exists? It's federated, E2E encrypted and clients are coming up nicely.
Or why not Matrix which is federated and has E2EE?
Matrix protocol is a good attempthttps://matrix.org/
Is it using Matrix? And if not, why the need for another protocol?
One of the best things about Matrix is its encryption and focus on security while supporting modern features users want. Not sure why anybody anywhere should have to settle for garbage like XMPP. Hell, this is one of the purposes of Riot or Matrix existing. Providing an open source implementation and design as a basis to build whatever an organisation or person needs. I'm not sure I see the problem.
Matrix is an open, federated protocol so something like this can't happen. Worst that could happen is bad stuff happens to Element (the flagship client) at which point people can either fork it or simply use another client.
Matrix looks the most promising to me. I believe the people behind it are principled (just like I think the people behind Signal are), but the Matrix protocol doesn't require heros. There's no single point of technical or legal failure.
What is the difference with the Matrix protocol? Matrix is already open-source, there are libraries publicly available that implement it, both for clients and serves, in different languages. Why not just adopting it?
