Simply powering off the laptop already enables what the user is asking for. Apple has thought of this.

Put Mac to sleep. Move mouse or touch keyboard to turn on again is one way to avoid having to use the power button.

Unless you are using something like a laptop and close the lid.

It depends. Can you turn off auto-sleep?

nightski May 17, 2014 View on HN

Why not just close the lid & put it to sleep? You really shut down every time you move somewhere with your laptop?

icebraining Dec 14, 2018 View on HN

Closing the lid is not a full restart, that's the point.

driverdan Jan 14, 2024 View on HN

Why wouldn't they just have the computers go into sleep mode automatically?

kennu Nov 21, 2009 View on HN

MacBook, never power off. Just close the lid while travelling.

selcuka May 21, 2024 View on HN

MacOS does that too, it's called Power Nap. You can turn it off, though.
