It's possible if you have the startup cash https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20726906
The article explicitly said it was "bootstrapped" - ie not dependent on outside investors. If I had a great idea for software that I could do on my own with the only investments being my time + some AWS resources where hopefully I could make enough money to pay myself a decent wage and pay for the operating expenses, why not ride the wave, make some money and when the bottom falls out, shut down the AWS resources, close shop, throw it on your resume and get job.
Certainly was. I kind of fell into my startup without really intending to start a business (I gave a pitch and someone literally wrote out a check on the spot and said go get to work), but I wonder if more founders would be better waiting and building up more capital before starting? If you only need 18K and three months full time then this should be within the reach of almost all founders especially if you are building a business where profitability is within relatively easy reach.
I'm surprised nobody suggested to raise money. You can then pay yourself a good salary AND work on your startup.A MVP with some traction and a solid business model is all you need.
was there initial funding or everything bootstrapped?
With what money and time? making a startup isn't free either.
Are you raising any money for this venture or bootstrapping?
What if your startup doesn't make any money
Save up a lot of money, ask family & friends to invest and apply to incubators that provide seed capital. Also move back in with family if that's an option. This is what I did and it allowed a three year runway to try and make it happen. It didn't happen in terms of a financial success but it was a lot of fun! Way more then working for the man in any field!
How about raising some seed funding and paying yourself a modest salary out of that, rather than seeing no cash for years? Seems to work well enough for many.
