i want apple to do it but here are downsides from their perspective:1. they don’t get 30% cut 2. other app stores could have pirated content (like cydia) 3. other app stores could have content with viruses

The App Store is a great way to get your apps out there–for certain apps. The fact that alternative app stores can exist does not mean the App Store cannot or will not be used: many developers (myself included) would probably still use it because it is simple, easy, built-in, and handles many things for you. The issue arises when it is the only app store, so it no longer has to compete on features–what incentive does the App Store have to improve the app upload experience? None, re

One argument in favor of multiple App Stores is that Apple has historically been very aggressive about globally banning entire product categories they dislike or apps that offend the governments of foreign countries. They don't have to perform that service if they allow other app stores or people install apps like they can on macos. The app store is more for Apple than it is for devs

In that case Apple fits in your example, not Google, as they don't prevent you to install any other store.

Apple strictly prohibits any apps outside their app store. Google does not. Yes Google abuses their popularity, but it's leagues better than Apple.

You might have a point if Apple did not control the only App store for iOS devices.

That's fine, but why it has to be only app store? why not let other App Stores compete on the same platform, and let the user choose, as we do with browsers ?
