Here's an article from one month ago discussing the over-supply of NAND and DRAM (and the effect it has on pricing): https://www.forbes.com/sites/tomcoughlin/2019/05/25/nand-dra...I can't help but feel very skeptical about the timing of this event, given the history of price-fixing in the industr

What caused a price crash of both DRAM and NAND??

gizmo Dec 4, 2025 View on HN

The big 3 memory manufacturers (SK Hynix, Samsung, Micron) are essentially all moving upmarket. They have limited capacity and want to use it for high margin HBM for GPUs and ddr5 for servers. At the same time CXMT, Winbond and Nanya are stepping in at the lower end of the market.I don't think there is a conspiracy or price fixing going on here. Demand for high profit margin memory is insatiable (at least until 2027 maybe beyond) and by the time extra capacity comes online and the memory

What's happening to DRAM and NAND?

xenadu02 Jan 2, 2017 View on HN

It is not the speed, reliability, or processes. There are numerous flash manufacturers all racing each other to build out capacity and increase density because they want to eat the HDD market.DRAM is controlled by a small cabal, all of whom have multiple convictions for price fixing and collusion. I believe Hynix shipped some sacrificial C-suite execs to do prison time in the US over it. To a large degree no one is building out DRAM fab capacity as well.DRAM prices have stayed high beca

You've answered the question! They're redirecting those chips to industrial use which makes desktop products more expensive and less available. Samsung is also extending DDR4 production, for example.

This is a classic slippery slope fallacy. Micron's reversible exit from one of its businesses is clearly does not signify the end of the PC era. As long as the demand for DIY PCs persists, there will be suppliers providing the products needed. If you follow the industrial memory market, you probably know that it is currently experiencing a severe supply shortage. I think Micron's decision simply reflects the current market situation.

DRAM prices have skyrocketed recently

Why would RAM, HD and GPU prices go up? Whos going out of business?
