It hasn't been long ago where there was news about right-wingers being kicked off of platforms and then the response by the HN public was "they're a private platform, they can kick people off for any reason they want. Nobody owes you a platform". Why wouldn't that same argument apply here?

de-platforming simply encourages new platforms to be built or adopted by the de-platformed, which in a way makes them stronger. it is short-sighted and long-term self-defeating. but hey censors gonna censor.

It's their platform, they can take down whatever they want. If you don't like it, make your own platform.

why don’t the platforms blow up? you’d think if these people are banned based on ideological issues only they would accumulate and thrive on these new platforms

there's a case that deplatforming of this kind is similar to censorship

People should get used to be deplatformed. I see this as a good thing. Maybe the cloud lock-in madness will stop.

paulddraper Jan 30, 2021 View on HN

Yes, that's why deplatforming happens.

agustif Jul 14, 2020 View on HN

Wow, that's an awful way of getting de-platformed

If you put too much comparative value on keeping the boot on Bad People's necks, you'll help close off methods to shift influence away from e.g. Facebook. If a lot of people move to e.g. the fediverse facebook equivalent, that shifts power away from facebook and makes it harder to deplatform people. So your two listed goals are in competition. That's why I'm saying you reap what you sow: you wanted a world where people can be deplatformed, and you got it.

Sure, If you feel the need to deplatform me go for it. I am not particularly invested in any particular online platform or community and regard them almost entirely as not worth the effort to maintain. If I kicked off one who cares.
