Looks like it doesn't use canvas. I would expect that performance will suck and it won't get any better in the future. Am I wrong?

It's just rendering to a canvas tag so it's not doing anything you can't already do in a browser (and haven't been able to do for years)

Canvas is better...if you're trying to do something that stays within a fixed-size box.
