Good news: the software you describe exists since 1985.
Wikipedia said 1980 was when it was publicly available, so that's what I went with.
It says right there on the wikipedia enttry it was introduced in 1959, which was before AS/400.

There is a computer chronicles on archive.org where they say this. I donβt remember the year but early 80s I would say.
The software is running since 1977.

What year are we talking? I get that is a pretty big use case now, but back then (mid 1980s?) was it also the case?
Version history would indicate that first versions are from mid-80s.
