Steam Games can definitely be DRM free too. Its the developer/publishers choice.

But you’re playing games on steam which has its own drm!

lots of steam games have no drm

I tend to only buy cheap games (or heavily discounted games) on Steam, partially because of their DRM. A game on Steam isn't bought, it's more of an indefinite lease. If Steam as a service shuts down, or something happens to my account, Valve isn't guaranteeing me access to my games (as far as I know).I try to buy on GOG even if it's slightly more for games I wish to keep, archive the installer, and be able to revisit years into the future.

Steam is pretty DRM free. Games have Steam integration which checks if your account owns the game, but they don't attempt to prevent tampering like true DRM does. If Steam were to disappear you could easily un-steam your games.GOG also bans third party DRM software. It's great, but big publishers don't like that which is why GOG is mostly indie.

Steam isn't synonymous with DRM, here is a list of DRM free games on steam. http://www.gog.com/forum/general/list_of_drmfree_games_on_st...

Isn't Steam itself also DRM?

kevingadd May 13, 2013 View on HN

Sorry, Steam games are not DRM-free. It is however the case that Steam has some of the least aggressive DRM you'll find in video games, but it is absolutely not DRM-free.

Never buy from stores that allow DRM, like Steam.Pretty sure that Gog's "DRM control" would have rejected this game ?Even better to buy directly from the devs, or from small publishers, like Matrix/Slitherine - but keep an eye out for them turning big and evil, like (Micro)ActiBlizz.(Another issue is platform-tied features that make you a second-class citizen : never buy games that have a Steam Workshop or use Steam Multiplayer.)

Nowadays it's very hard to own a game. Unless you buy on services like GOG, which offer DRM free installers. You don't really own your games on Steam or Origin and they can remove your access at any time without a warning.
