They were bought by Google, why would Google do that..?

ojbyrne Oct 26, 2010 View on HN

Because Google have already bought it?

misabon Sep 23, 2018 View on HN

Looks like one of Google’s notorious acquihires.

tuananh Feb 5, 2013 View on HN

Google acquires them to do so. I read it somewhere.

Does Google actually have a history of destroying companies that they acquire?

sjg007 Nov 4, 2015 View on HN

Google should've bought them.

Google's statements are PR fluff. This was an acqui-hire. They paid for a few talented engineers. I expect it to be shutdown in a year or two.

woeirua Apr 20, 2023 View on HN

I have to assume so, if not why else did Google acquire them?

avichal Oct 8, 2011 View on HN

Google is normally not outwardly competitor focused. Makes me think there are acquisition discussions going on behind the scenes and this is part of the diligence.

I would've thought Google themselves would have bought it many years ago, to protect their users (and their brand.)
