US Left Center-Right Globally
Discussions compare the US political spectrum to international standards, arguing that the Democratic Party and US 'left' are center-right or right-wing by European/Western metrics, with no true left-wing presence in US politics.

What you call extreme left in USA is barely center left in any other country in the westWhat is called far right in USA is the same thing we call neo-fascism anywhere elseIn US a socialist party is unimaginable, in Germany it is the largest party of the center left, same in Italy, France, Spain, ScandinaviaSo probably the bias comes from living in a country that's leaning towards the right in its entirety@moderators: have I earned the automatic downvote? Whatever I post shows ze
The "extreme" left in the US system maps (policy-wise) almost exactly to center-right in most other western democracies. Talking about viable politicians not twitter creatures by the way.
From the perspective of someone from Europe this is a very valid question, cause Biden is right of the center, so not really what somehow who describes themselves as "leftist" usually votes for. Even Bernie Sanders, often seen as the start of socialism in America, is only a bit left of the center in typical political quadrants. The problem is that US politics are very skewed to the right, so many there think clear right wing positions are on the left.(<a href="https://ww
As somebody not from the US, the mainstream "left" seems very right wing. When compared to the rest of the world, there is no left wing political party in the United States.
From what I understand leftist politics in the US would be considered right in the EU. Casual observers of our political discourse from other countries have a hard time discerning the difference between our political parties. I assume this is because in terms of foreign policy, they largely agree.
The easy explanation here is that both the Democrats and the Republicans in the United States are 'right of center', America at present does not have a functional 'left', just the illusion of one.
US "left" is basically center though.
For perspective, what in the US is called "liberal" in the rest of the world is rather to the right of centre. The two parties are pulling apart from each other but to outsiders they remain very similar both in policy and ideology, at least at the national level. Neither is talking of actual reform, only incremental change.
Do you realize that left/right in the US are pretty much right/far-right to the rest of the world?
Interestingly, right-wing . left-wing is usually defined specifically for the European political spectrum. The United States has a liberal - conservative divide, but it is vastly different from what we see in Europe. If anything, left/right does not mean anything in the US due to the radically different Overton window. As a European, I would consider the Democrat party to be right-wing. If you want left-wing, you have to go as far as Sanders or AOC.
