But it's not meant to be regularly serviced - if there's an issue or code, replacing the oil can definitely be done.

I’d estimate I have driven cars 10,000 times and I have never done that. Just take it to a mechanic every 5k miles. And nothing that touches the oil has ever gone wrong.

Phones don't need oil changes. We're talking about things that break not regular maintenance. Even if your battery degrades you can still get a power bank, it's a popular cheap workaround that works well, it's not such a life or death issue as some people make it be. But a broken down car can be for many people.

So basically we need an oil change.

I know two people who have bricked their gas-powered cars by going too long between oil changes. This isn't a novel problem for complex machines. You need to maintain them if you'd like to continue using them.

This is like saying you stopped changing your motor oil and the engine's still running.

Engine oil gets a lot of cargo cult on automotive forums. Personally, I never saw an engine die because it missed the schedule by some thousands km. I wait until my car tells me it needs an oil change, and then I wait a bit more :).
