Do you really ship this stuff in containers rather than by bulk carrier ?

empath75 β€’ Feb 7, 2019 β€’ View on HN

They don’t ship that stuff one container at a time.

Container ships seem very inefficient. Is that why shipping from taobao is horrible?

Ekaros β€’ Oct 24, 2021 β€’ View on HN

If problem is too many empty containers. Wouldn't actually subsidising shipping them off make sense? That is make it worthwhile for ships to load them on.

smackfu β€’ Mar 25, 2013 β€’ View on HN

Seems like just the time in the container being shipped would eat up a lot of that.

oh_sigh β€’ Nov 13, 2023 β€’ View on HN

OP is talking about loading the entire boat onto rails, not the containers themselves.

These ships carry more cargo than you can intuitively comprehend. Transfer to truck would be impossible, to rail would take too long.

Freight shipping can be a little like that.

You can go to any port town in the US and you will see containers stacked up like tiny towns. The equipment to move the containers is usually the bottleneck not the yard space.

Container ships are hard to beat for efficiency.
