actually, i like "Michael A. Hiltzik’s Dealers of Lightning: Xerox PARC and the Dawn of the Computer Age" (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0887309895/) much better than the wizards book.it is quite a long read, but is very good.
I loved A History of Modern Computing by Paul Ceruzzihttps://www.amazon.com/History-Modern-Computing/dp/026253203...
I'm reminded of The Soul of a New Machine[0] by Tracy Kidder. Essential reading, even today.[0] https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7090.The_Soul_of_a_New_M...
The Soul of A New Machine by Tracy Kidder is fantastic. The story of developing a Data General mini-computer.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Soul_of_a_New_Machine
I highly recommend "The Innovators" by Walter Isaacson. It dives deep into the history of computer science and the people who made huge innovations into the things that we use every day.I read it when it came out and was really inspired.[Link to Amazon] --> http://amzn.to/2zINlfi
The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution by Walter Isaacson is a must-readhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Innovators_(book)
It sounds like you are referring to "Hackers" by Steven Levy. It's a great book and that's a great story. I've posted it here:http://frammish.org/used_up.html
I found the book Eniac: The Triumphs and Tragedies of the World's First Computer by Scott McCartney a pretty good read:* https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/720730
I've been reading The Dream Machine by Mitchell Waldrop and it tells the story of early computing centered on J.C.R. Licklider. It's an easy recommendation for the HN audience. If your eyesight is less than perfect I recommend buying both the hardcover and the digital version of the book. The hardcover is printed by Stripe (yes, the payments people) and it's a beautiful thing but the text is small.
