You won't stay a world power by allowing others to attack you, even at a smaller scale with lesser weapons.
Theoretically yes, in practice, small states bordering major powers have trouble keeping their sovereignty. At the very least they need to enter some mutual defence alliances.
> if a country can't defend itself with diplomacy then it is in a lot of trouble. You are absolutely correct.I wish more folks understood this.
You still have to worry about despots in other nation states using their armies to come for Your things.
It's not about being anti-west, it's about the likelyhood of being invaded.
That's not really possible. Once they start pissing off other countries they will lose their access to deal with them and "benefit from them".
I understand where you are coming from, it's just naive to think that a nation state won't form a counter action to preserve it's ability to wage war.
I'd imagine that one of the perks of sovereignty is that no one, other than your own army, is obliged to protect you.
A world where each country is just strong enough to defend itself from an attack, but not invade anyone else seems ideal.
That makes no sense. Plenty of countries exist with no ability to defend themselves against their neighbors in a war.Usually what you do is prioritize good enough relations to avoid war.
