There are smoke alarms for that.
but what if the alarm isn't working when something is wrong?
Have you ever had any false alarms with this?
Consider that it happens regularly every couple of years, especially when you have multiple smoke alarms. Then if you have high-ceilings it makes it much more difficult (have to go get a ladder in the middle of the night). It will freak kids out, they're not fun to get back to bed.The elderly or disabled might not be able to remove the battery or remove the alarm.I'd say it's definitely a step in the right direction and in-line with Nests other product (probably much of
Nest Protect sort of does this.
„Smoke detectors don‘t lie“ might be true, but not everything they detect is always smoke. In my building all flats have one. It gets triggered by workers cutting a hole in the wall or people cooking. We covered it when we had the fog machine for Halloween because that surely would have triggered it. Almost every time it went off it was a false alarm.Which is also the second thing. It should never be silent. If it detects it needs to report audible and someone should come to your room. What
Alarm system with remote fire alarm capability. Those things are everywhere and if they don't work people could easily die.
> a better smoke alarm may also alleviate the problemLike the nest?
I would love the wired ones to just have a built in super capacitor; enough to give it 5-10 min (minimum) runtime during a power outage. No Battery. ONLY alarm loudly for sensor detects possible smoke (known positive detection), very softly for sensor broken (failed self test).
you are right that you don't see them on older building but there are a range of other off the shelf products that can integrate with a smoke detector, phone, doorbell to flash lights or lamp. condo/apt complex also only have to install fire alarm audio visual devices in the room under only certain conditions are met. I see no reason that anyone should rely on this app as a life safety device, it could be a last ditch effort when you travel to a friends home or something similar.
