Your data is not safe unless you have a local backup that you control. Don't trust Google (or any one cloud storage provider); they haven't earned it.

Why not cloud for everything? They really want YOUR DATA!

I hope she's keeping backups somewhere outside the cloud.

If you care about it, don't store it exclusively in the cloud (AKA somebody else's computer). Consumer cloud services offer no guarantees of the longevity of your data and providers like Google are well-known for turning off services that are not profitable to them with minimal warning.

Don't trust the "Cloud" for your backups.

I'm not saying don't use the cloud at all. I'm just saying you should keep a local copy in addition to the cloud, and to not use services that don't let you do that. (And if, e.g., your cloud copy is held by Google and your local copy is on a phone with Google Find My Device remote wipe enabled, that doesn't count as two.)

back up your data, cloud storage is ephemeral

IMHO. "I trusted cloud services to store my data". I never do that. I have multiple offline encrypted backup copies (on-site and off-site). I do not trust anything out of my arm's reach. The cloud is not an option for serious backups (unless you have n copies with different vendors + offline backups). I think the convenience of the cloud (with encryption) is an option when you have offline backups. I hope you will get your data back and that nothing will be compromised.

You should read the terms of service with your Cloud provider again. When you go out and buy a phone with cash, nobody can take that from you. When you go out and spend money on Cloud servers you will not walk away with that data should you stop paying your bill, or the company is hacked, or there is a scandal and they go out of business, or they decide you're breaking their rules and they delete it. When you setup an externally available NAS from home the only thing stopping you from acces

There is no cloud but other people's computers. Don't store personal data on other people's computers.
