Insurance rates, while higher because of type of car and age, shouldn't be too absurd. Even if he wrecks the thing, the company is only out ~9,000 or so.
I can't imagine they're more expensive than a collision.
I would imagine the difference would manifest itself in higher insurance rates. You can't just "write off more value" for free.
Was thinking the same thing. Sounds expensive to repair. Leading to higher insurance premiums
If your vehicle costs that much for a "simple" repair you're going to be suffering from expensive insurance too.
They seem to have impressive repair costs. If I was an insurer I'd quote high because of that, not because they were more likely to crash. (eg https://cleantechnica.com/2018/05/20/heres-what-7000-of-dama...)
Whether or not he was insured against this particular damage doesn't make the cost of the repair less outrageous. In the end, drivers will be paying for these repairs, whether directly or through "cheap" monthly insurance payments that hide these occasional events.(I guess similar arguments could be made about other insurance markets)
I think apt comparison would be collision coverage. How much would you charge from someone that collides a car each year. Probably more than cost of those collisions on average.
Doesn't that mean it's not cost effective to repair in case of accidents?Small bump - got to dismantle the whole car and replace half of it.
Perhaps it would make more sense to think of it as buying “up to $50k”;they’re certainly not paying out the whole amount every time.If more expensive cars leads to more expensive claims on average, the price of insurance might reasonably go up even if the worst-case exposure is the same…
