Yes, in places like Seattle, NYC, Boston, DC, etc., where the housing costs are also astronomical, and your salary is commensurately lower.

I can't speak for the OP, but check the salary differences between the two cities. The higher prices in SF may be offset.

Yes. Salaries in the SF bay area and NYC are ridiculous. Unfortunately cost of living expenses in those areas are ridiculous as well, which makes it far less worth it to move there for the average person than one would think.

> Move to NYC or SFFactor in cost of living and you're really not making much more.

Seattle and Austin are totally comparable, even preferable, to NYC and SF in many ways. So yes, all else equal, why not save an extra 10% of your income?

For Americans coming from NYC or SF, is the cost of living really that much higher?

ascv Apr 2, 2013 View on HN

To some extent, the pay scale is relative. SF is very, very expensive. You can earn far less in another city, yet enjoy a higher quality of life.edit: to answer your question, I don't know. You might find this interesting though:https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2763932

But compared to SF or NYC, it's significantly cheaper, and you can receive a salary close to what is expected in SF or NYC.

I'm in SF, so I little expereince with the salaries in those places. It may be that it's their 'cost-of-living' difference that is at the heart of the issue.

What general region or city is this? Cost of living can be a major effect on pay, comparing, say, the insanity of the SF Bay area to anywhere else.
