Not criticizing. This is what Ultimate did in Knight Lore https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_Lore, and it blew everyone’s minds at the time.
It's funny looking at it now, because in my head it was basically photo-realistic!For the era it was such a mind-blowing game, and that's really saying something considering it's the same year that gave us NBA Jam, Virtua Fighter, Ridge Racer, Star Fox, X-Wing, Link's Awakening, Doom, and Mega Man X (what a year!).
I posted it because it has an amazing story about how a videogame that I used to play when I was a kid was made. Elite was an absolute knock-out compared to whatever else was available in the day, the closest I can compare it to in terms of moving forward was the arrival of 'Doom'. Taking it apart was even more interesting than playing it, especially how they obfuscated their code.
Games were showing rather then telling long before half life. That was not something special. I don't know whether people here did not played games other then half life back then or half life is only thing they remember. And the difference between full cit scene and what happened in half life was really really minor.
Yeah, the "find the yellow key" style gameplay was par for the course at the time, but does feel one dimensional. Half Life changed that, but also System Shock (Classic) was a lessor known game of that era that was hugely different on this point. If you like games of this era I'd suggest checking it out. It uses a different control scheme vs most FPS's, one that ultimately the industry did not chose to follow, and that bothers some people, but I think it fits the gameplay and
Reminds me of the first (pre 3D shooter) Grand Theft Auto.
Yes this would have been mind-blowing.Ps there was a game that had a similar FPS view in those days. It was a maze game with polygon graphics but no textures. I forget the name. No shooting though!
Myth I & II were unbelievably smooth & slick games at the time. I had a crudie Voodoo Banshee or Rush (i forget which, but significant difference yes) card at the time, and this was such a smooth slick gorgeous game world. It felt radically alive like few other games did. Warzone 2100 comes to mind as another high performing game of the era.
In many ways, it's a "perfect" game. Smooth scrolling, no frame rate issues, cool art style, amazing music, excellent control. No tutorial levels, no shitty movies, no hand-holding. Just - go. It blew my mind in so many ways. Way ahead of its time. The first game on the PC that came close to matching that experience was Commander Keen, which was, what, 1991? 6 years later...
Wow, I have almost the exact same memory. Think mine was a 3dfx-branded Voodoo 2 (released after the Voodoo 3 came out, but I couldn't afford it). The switch from nearest-neighbor to bilinear texture interpolation was amazing, but it was the yellow cast light from moving rockets that I remember most clearly. Q3A and UT were soon to follow, Rainbow Six, it was a good time for PC gaming.
