Probably because they'd potentially be blocking "legitimate" users

It's possible this is just an attempt to limit bot accounts

haecceity Jul 29, 2020 View on HN

It could be used to deter users from making multiple accounts. It won't stop determined spammers though.

How is a blocking feature going to help when it's trivial to create a new account?

hueving Jul 8, 2018 View on HN

Careful, because of nat that's also a way to ban potential legit users.

They're back. At this point it might be worthwhile switching off new account registrations for a while?

KorematsuFredt Sep 28, 2021 View on HN

Did you try rate limiting, shadow banning, ip banning etc?

alecbz Jun 14, 2023 View on HN

I imagine there's ways to curtail that (like detecting non-human users).

It probably requires a phone number to limit the amount of bots on the platform.

jpalomaki May 14, 2024 View on HN

It's an easy (obviously not perfect) way to have some limit on the number of accounts you create.
