Difference being apple is competent when it comes to product design. Most companies aren't apple.
It's Apple, necessity isn't their design language
Right, because the products Apple makes don't need designing... ?
Yet another example of Apple taking design more seriously than other big tech companies
I think the term you might be looking for is product excellence. Apple rarely do technology for the sake of technology, they do it for the improvement of their product from the customer's point of view. They do appredciate good design, but that doesn't make them a fashion company, it makes them a company who scrutinises every aspect of the product, not just the spec sheet and I personally really appreciate that.
Apple competes on user experience. Not price, and certainly not specs.
You don't see Apple making that. They focus on few things and make them great.
Statements like this are short-sighted. Apple sells based on design, so I would say that in this instance you are incorrect (based on the number of people who like Apple kit for the design). Hacker News is a business-focused site related to programming and so whilst people might not 'like' Apple, as a company, you should learn from what they do. I have learned from watching both Apple and Microsoft right the way down to smaller companies.
I do think Apple puts more thought and creative attention into their hardware design than anyone else, or at least that’s their image, and based on that, it’s easy to see how they have (in addition) become fashion trend-setters in the industry. So even if a design or detail is bad (according to me, or you, or most people, like a bad movie), a lot of thought went into it, and probably a lot of people will copy it! :)
I meant Apple makes beautiful products.
