Crop rotation doesn't improve the soil at scale?

vkou Sep 8, 2022 View on HN

Won't this result in soil depletion, as you bury vital non-carbon nutrients?

I thought crop rotation was good for the soil?

What kind of fertilizer though? I believe this article mentions using manure and organic fertilizers.I'm no expert, but you cannot maintain a healthy soil without putting stuff back in it - manure, biomass / mulch, etc.Anecdotal and incomparable, but my backyard (just a few m2 of exposed soil) has had an overhaul in the past year or two; it was very sandy and kinda boring, but mixing in mulch / soil improver made it a lot better. There's worms in the soil now, that kind

You might ruin your soil over time.

Permaculture is not, it's actually enriching the soil (in terms of living organisms) and the local ecosystem, it's a sustainable farming method gaining popularity with the decreasing productivity of common intensives monocultures

It doesn't, because you will get no yield if you don't let a field go fallow once in a while

Looks like you're armchair voting without subject matter knowledge. Do some research on no-till rotational grazing systems for natural fertility.

There was a guy on youtube doing no till farming and he basically thought that commercial fertilizer and pesticide is a waste of money. Between growing seasons he is using a location specific mix of 18-20 cover crops to keep the soil covered. He didn't even clean up the residue from the previous crops, preferring to seed directly through a thickly covered bed. He barely had any problems with pests or diseases as he the predators of the pests survive and take care of the problem or he made

The savesoil.org movement could be a possible solution. Incentivise farmers to plant cover crops when it's not season. This increases organic content in the soil, which over time increases the nutritional value in the fruits and vegetables.
