Sounds like the error is yours. Trusting science isn't tantamount to trusting academia.
Until this is fixed, people need to stop saying "listen to The Science", in an attempt to convince others of a given viewpoint. I don't know why you're implying that laymen are beneath discussing/speculating on scientific research, since during COVID plenty of bullshit was spread by the supposed experts too, which is what fueled distrust in the first place. Scientists make mistakes. Scientists change their mind in the light of the evidence. Your distrust of this scientist is distrust of science. Please, don't do this.
It's amusing how some people are like "trust the science" and tout the knowledge and authority of experts but then scientists like this get flagged because their findings don't align with their beliefs. There seems to be a mixed signal here. Should we trust experts or not?
