10GbE Networking Hardware

Discussions focus on the affordability, availability, and adoption of 10GbE and higher-speed Ethernet hardware like switches, NICs, and cables, with users recommending cheap options such as MikroTik and Mellanox gear while debating why it's not more widely used.

What does this mean? Why can't you use 10GbE?

scott_karana Oct 7, 2015 View on HN

Maybe it'll be a 10GbE interface?

Cat-6 can take 10Gbps over ~50m runs, and the cards are under $100 now

Without 10gig ethernet its really limited in that role.

stonogo Aug 28, 2024 View on HN

You can get 400gbit ethernet from half a dozen vendors.

Come on man. 10gig ethernet please.

32 port 100G switches are dirt cheap. If the network is your bottleneck you likely overspent on the wrong hardware.

shmerl Aug 9, 2020 View on HN

Not really a downgrade it if offers 10 Gbps easily.

All 100G is enterprisy. For a cheap solution, I'd get a pair of used Mellanox ConnectX4 or Chelsio T6, and a QSFP28 direct attach copper cable.

You don't need an expensive switch. Five port 2.5G + SFP+ with poe can be pretty affordable and shouldn't run very hot.
