Good luck to them. It's not often people get to go somewhere new(ish) and try out a new model of society.I think a society based on Rand and/or libertarianism is a terrible idea, likely to be brutal and darwinistic and to degenerate into feudalism. I also think that this isn't really a model for a society based on these ideals - lets face it, the people who are going to be going there are a wealthy subset, not representative of much. But good for them for trying.
I think you've just described a modern version of the socialist utopia from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_from_Nowhere
I appreciate the moonshot thinking, but I don’t think this is a realistic framework for human civilization. We already live in a society in which not everyone contributes (rich and poor), and it’s problematic. Inequality and resentment are inevitable when some contribute (or feel like they contribute) more than others. I think humans are generally not evil, but we are also quite fickle. I think you’re describing the dystopia of The Hunger Games from the perspective of a Capitol resident. :)
It's possible they were led by utopian thinking. For example, I'd love a society where everyone knows everything about everyone but just doesn't care what weird ideas and preferences they have. But I also expect that no society that hasn't been telepathic since it's dawn would be work as well as the idea goes ;)
I think what you're describing is an utopia and likely will never come
I don't know how to respond to your claim because it's too vague. In any case, perfection is the enemy of good. Actual democracy would be better than this. It seemed like the society they were talking about was utopian anyway, so everyone was being kind and cooperative, not operating adversarially like we do today. From the synopsis of the book:> they do nothing on an industrial scale, reject governance, have no non-laboring caste, do not expand their population or terr

This is a good example of creating a utopia to explore everything that is disliked about a status quo.The article is almost entirely anecdotal with little offered to back up supposition and conjecture.
This to me is like saying your a sovereign citizen. The world would be better off if we all shared resources and everyone enjoyed some minimum of quality of life while there still be strong desires from individuals to create. Its a nice idea but not a reality that is possible.
What is the proposed alternative to governments? Some Religious utopia?
