Airbnb: can you trust other people to not trash your place or the host walking to your room drunk (happened to me lol).

You're acting as if the ability to do what I want with my property makes it a foregone conclusion that evil things will happen. No, I'm acting as if the ability for an unlimited and unknown number of complete strangers to enter my apartment building makes it a foregone conclusion that evil things will happen, which is pretty much true. Even if the vast majority of AirBnB customers behave, the odds are that there will always be an outlier that will ruin it.

The sassy tone is really not necessary. Also, airbnb's entire business is predicated on inviting strangers into your house. Do you have anything else?

and airbnb really doesnt care about this or they would take further steps to ensure that their rentors have the authority to rent the place. they say they do, but they don't. without renters i think airbnb would be in trouble..how many homeowners really want strangers coming in and out of their home regularly?

Airbnb has done a great job so far, but I think there needs to be some more effort put into validating the renters information. There are several ways to do this via online identities, credit cards, etc. The other option I would definitely add is a specialized rental insurance of some kind. An additional $10/night across all rentals should help pay for situations like this along with the basic broken item situations that I know you deal with. Let the homeowners decide if they want to charge/pay

Maybe instead of "used AirBnB" you say something like "rented out a space with AirBnB" or something to the effect - I doubt the tenants are concerned with the breakin, but many landlords would be, yet both would be considered to have "used AirBnB".

Are you sure this was due to Airbnb and not just bad residents?

standardUser Apr 25, 2020 View on HN

It's up to you, the renter, to vet your host and rental to the best of your ability. Maybe don't pick a "mega cheap" place next time? I've used AirBnB tons of times and cannot relate even a little with all the complaints in this thread (and other HN threads).

Doesn't AirBNB make it easier to screen people who do this sort of stuff?I wonder why I was downvoted. Because I said I'd rent my place out legally?

Have Airbnb guests been an actual problem, or is this a pure Not In My Building reaction?
