I am sorry to see your comment in gray. I was heavily downvoted as well, but I share your views fully. The counter-example of a female-dominated environment is food for thought. At work, I just avoid women altogether and go for lunch with guys so I can say almost anything without offending anyone.
What if it makes the man's female coworkers uncomfortable?
You did the absolute right thing in that situation. I was in a meeting once with a CIO, middle management, and two female developers. At one point, the CIO got bored with the tech-talk and drove the conversation to his recently taking his son around to visit college campuses... and then onto the topic of which campuses had the hottest female students. The middle-managers immediately joined in the conversation, while the female techs stared at their hands uncomfortably until the meeting was over.
"too hard on the white man." Seems there was sexism at the office.
The point is why cant we expect the women to adjust to the realities of the world? Wherever there are girls they are going to talk about other girls and their shoes and that sorta stuff which I might find offensive and wherever there are men they are going to talk about sex. I don't see why women take an offense to that. No one is cracking a joke on her or asking her to participate in the joke.I would rather have a sexist but cohesive team rather than a politically correct non-cohesive team.
Wow.So few information, but so many people ready to fire his ass.At this point, I wonder if we should have men/women segregation in the workplace. This is the logical conclusion if you want to avoid this kind of problems.
I understand, but it's referencing the environment in a workplace that applies to both sexes not just women. Her complaint may have also applied to the men there, so really we should get both sides opinion shouldn't we?
Mistreated by men? Did you miss the part where she writes that almost everybody in HR was a woman?
This article would be much more palatable if it was non gender-ed. Everyone has had crazy/uncomfortable stuff said to them at work. This is a universal experience but this article make it seem like it is only women. This implies a men vs women dynamic. This immediately lumps all men into the offenders and all women as victims. This is not the case. How about a different conversation? Along the line of what crazy shit have you heard at work? That way everyone could share what they don'
Not sure where you're getting the "think they are not sexist" from. Everyone has unconscious biases (men and women). Some are more aware of them than others. This problem is not sexist in and of itself. It would be equally inappropriate for a woman to put a man in this position in the work place or for a man to put another man in this position, or woman to put another woman etc.
