So.. Redis had a choice of licenses: BSD (improvements do not need to be contrbuted back) or GPL (improvements do need to be contributed back). For whatever reason they chose BSD. And now Amazon made some improvements and is not contributing back. Not sure why anyone is surprised.
Redis didn’t go “suddenly proprietary”. They switched to a source available license. Cloud providers will need to pay if they’re making money selling redis.
Disclosure: I work for AWS where I build infrastructure servicesThe license to Redis never changed. See his blog post [1] around the time when his _employer_ announced some license changes on modular extensions to Redis. See also threads on HN [2].[1] http://antirez.com/news/120[2] https://news.yc
Hi, this is Yiftach, CTO and Co-founder of Redis Labs. First, let me assure you that Redis remains and always will remain, open source, BSD license. For avoiding any doubt - commons clause (as defined in commonsclause.com) is applied only to add-ons (modules), on top of Redis (e.g. RediSearch, Redis Graph, ReJSON, Redis-ML, Rebloom) that were developed by Redis Labs .We initially released these modules under AGPL license but found two major drawbacks (a) AGPL does not prevent cloud providers
Not sure what products they are offering, but redis changed the licenses for certain modules to prevent competitionhttps://techcrunch.com/2019/02/21/redis-labs-changes-its-ope...
Redis changed their license a day after your comment.See https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39772562
Open source is a gift economy. Receiving a gift does not form a social contract that entitles you to future gifts. It is not a "rug pull" for someone to stop giving you gifts. The old versions of Redis are yours for all time. No one can take that away from you. In fact, Redis is still giving you gifts to this day, just with a different wrapping. The new license seems perfectly reasonable, given how much companies like Amazon have exploited the gift economy to the point where it

Last I checked, Redis still had a CLA. In other words, they reserve the exclusive right to turn back into closed source. As long as they require that contributor agree to such terms, there’s no reason to trust that they won’t pull the same thing again.
Redis has a BSD license because it was written by antirez who did not intend to make it a commercial enterprise. Today its too late to change and wont help Redis Inc to protect their ip. We looked at elastic, mongodb, cocroach labs, mariadb, redpanda, atlassian, grafana labs , scylladb. The last two are agpl but the motivation is the same: to protect themselves.
