Seeming like they care, either for population karma points or for a more sinister reason like control. Like how the oil industry has spent billions to control the climate change conversation.edit: regarding downvotes I really don't understand the HN crowd anymore. It's like finger on the button ready to disregard anything that slightly differs from their world view. I imagine it has a lot to do with oil company lobbying.

Three words: oil industry lobbyists.

You're missing the point. Their impact on the subject is much greater than simply making oil products available. They pushed a narrative that aligned with their self interests at the same time it was detrimental to the world. They did this through various means, including press/media and lobbying. The world of energy production could be very different from what it is today if they didn't act only on their self interest. Actions were taken much later due to their misinformation. In

All the oil companies investing billions into destroying ecosystem we depend on can't be wrong!

Oil & gas industries have been aware of our path towards climite change for decades and have actively worked to suppress and discredit the science. They use their wealth to lobby against the transition to renewable energy. Only in recent years have they started to green-wash now that public opinion is more unified on the topic. The list of their crimes against the environment is endless. They make billions of dollars in profit and yet insist in cutting corners that lead to disasterous oi

I don't really see the point of remembering this. More salient perhaps is the behaviour of the oil companies: their cover ups of climate science and pollution, their lobbying, their massive, massive subsidies and their (frankly cruel) profiteering. It'll be good that they're gone, when they're gone, and may we never have to rely on such morally unsound people or technology ever again.

I don't think it's a justifiable for risk mitigation reasons to act as the oil industry has. What they can do more of is invest in more R&D for moonshot energy products. Or invest into existing green energy areas. I believe there are just better short term returns on PR (deceiving the public as much as possible), buying help & protection from regulators, and the status quo generally. I also believe the powers that be in that industry, like many others, are old, uninspired, and

Oil execs and lobbyists are worried about renewables. Better extract as much profit as we can now before renewable energy tech gets better. Keep prices low so consumption stays high. Convince the American people domestic drilling is a good thing, even though it depletes oil reserves for the long term. The oil industry today is similar to the logging industry a century ago.

What you dont get is that what "mega-dams and hydro" do on a relatively small area is what oil/gas/coal is doing on a global scale. These oil companies are going to try survive as long as possible by a astroturfing, throw out misleading studies, bribing public officials, any means necessary to make as much money as possible. Because at the end of the day for a corporation its about making money nothing else. What we got do is get the government to stop subsidizing oil
