Facebook can't be the only app that has collected this data, can it? What about every other app that requests permission to see that data?

niels Nov 26, 2010 View on HN

No, because FB has allowed them access to these data.

rsync Mar 4, 2014 View on HN

... then why is it ok for facebook to have all of that same information ?

etimberg Apr 20, 2020 View on HN

Why would anyone trust facebook with this data?

freehunter Apr 5, 2013 View on HN

Well, any other app could. Facebook is not exclusive in having access to this information, they're just one of the few asking you for it. Every other app could ask for it as well.

If I remember correctly you can't request access to any non-public user info without submitting your app first for manual approval by Facebook's staff. So, if there are FB apps out there tracking extra user info, Facebook must have reviewed and approved them, so they are obviously OK with such usage. So it's not an exploit of the platform, it's FB's core business...

any sources on data that FB is scraping about you?

etha Oct 19, 2011 View on HN

It's not obvious to me. How were you harmed by facebook logging this data?

ensignavenger Oct 8, 2024 View on HN

Facebook users shared data with their friends. Those friends gave access to the data to CA. So like if you share a document with me and I then give CA access to my GDrive.

Facebook only has access to what you give it.
