I think both are fine, actually. The movie definitely departed from the book, especially near the end.

There are major differences between the book and the movie.

The movie was really more of a deconstruction than an adaptation of the books

This is like saying the movie is better than the book.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but this is one of the few films that due to a few small cuts and tweaks, is so much better than the book it makes it not worth reading.

I would be VERY surprised if the movie delivered as much as the book, given the necessity for intellectual property rights in film.

You might try the Solaris novel instead. The movie was based on it, but as you know books can be very different.

You're not alone. It's one of my favourite movies, however it deviates quite a bit from the books. Still good :)I can see why other might not like it though.

You won't be disappointed. The movie was really good IMHO. It could have been a killer tv series as well Though I have the benefit of 15 years since I last read any of the books nothing seemed to conflict.

I've never heard this, I've seen both movies and read the book. They are so dissimilar you'd hardly know they were related barring the plot. And they are all very good in their own way. It's a pretty interesting case study in adaptation so I'm looking forward to this.
