where are we extracting the energy from? is it effectively geothermal power?

debesyla Dec 29, 2024 View on HN

Isn't it geothermal? So just drill deeper..? Or something? (I am a dummy at this topic, just asking.)

Why is geothermal not more prominent?

There seems to be some confusion as to whether this is "true" geothermal energy or not. Conceptually anything that taps underground heat sources is geothermal energy [1], but the technology used and the possible applications depend significantly on whether we are talking about a geologically active part of the crust (higher than normal temperatures) such as those found near tectonic plates boundaries, volcanoes etc. The technical term is high enthalpy versus low enthalpy sources. He is close to a volcano, and on the edge of a tectonic plate. He could likely extract geothermal energy for heating purposes by merely drilling a few meters into the ground, which would greatly reduce the power load on his plant in the winter. I wonder why he didn't go that route - he must have though of it.

We should use them as geothermal power sources.

Go deep enough and you might as well just build a geothermal power plant.

mrfusion Feb 20, 2015 View on HN

Could that be used to create Geothermal power plants?

If the area is already geothermal...

This thing bobs to the top of HN every few weeks.1. No, there is absolutely no hint of any danger of extracting too much heat, no matter what random problem you make up. Really.2. A 10km deep hole gets you 1/600th of the way to the center of the planet, much less than e.g. the skin of an apple or the enamel on a billiard ball. So, it would tell you nothing about stuff deeper, never mind bollocks it.3. Geothermal energy is not a major growth sector even where heat is right near the
