Apple recently pushed 2 push notifications to my phone related to promotional pricing for Apple Music. Apple disallows Spotify to advertise promotions in-app.Apple disallows Spotify access to full Watch APIs and Siri APIs they themselves leverage for Apple Music.Apple also occasionally bullies Spotify by keeping app review in limbo.Additionally, Spotify eats the 30% Apple tax, and I would imagine the costs for music licensing rights are fairly inelastic.Apple is not playing fair. Spotify have lodged a complaint against Apple with the European Competition Commission over precisely this issue.https://techcrunch.com/2019/03/13/spotify-files-a-complaint-...
The issue is that Apple is leveraging their dominant position to push a Spotify competitor. Apple Music is not subject to the 30% App Store fee, and so they can just simply undercut Spotify by 30%.Going with your analogy, is BMW trying to push an Apple CarPlay competitor?
Apple does not force Spotify to support its competition. Spotify does not offer any IAP so in fact it’s Apple that is giving away all its R&D into AVFoundation and various other cutting edge APIs for free to its competition. Apple does not make any money from Spotify. It’s true when you become as successful as Apple, the rentiers will come knocking. That doesn’t make the rentiers’ case particularly strong or honorable.
Spotify has no option to pay more because the labels eat all their profits. Apple being able to eat that cost because of their other ventures is anti-competitive. Blame the record labels, not Spotify.
Isn’t Spotify benefiting from Apple devices? If not, then they can simply not be on Apple devices right? If they are benefiting, then is it unacceptable for them to pay for the benefit?
don't really see how spotify are different to appleit's another middleman taking a cut
The main issue is that Apple doesn't allow you to use any other payment method - even via linking to a website - to use in-app purchases.Take this analogy: Apple is a city and has exclusive say over whether or not you can build a brick-and-mortar store on their land. Apple here exclusively owns all of the land, and won't let anyone else build on it without their permission (required distribution via app store). In the current situation, Apple is saying "you can rent the land
I’m unhappy because Apple has prevented me from using my phone how I want to. I recognised Spotify’s published complaints against Apple 2-3 years before they spoke out. I vowed to never use or buy Apple Music, Apple Watch, HomePod, and even a new iPhone because Apple were degrading my experience with Spotify compared to their own services. They deliberately created an unfair playing field on their platform in order to make more money. This problem is the same. How can Spotify compete with Appl
