That says more about Apple than it does Gruber.
It's nice to see Gruber writing about these things, because he has credibility amongst the Apple copium huffers.I feel like this is the kind of gripe that would be waved away as no big deal or "well actually…" if someone outside the Apple fandom made it.
iOS developer here, see the same thing with any article writing positively about an Apple product
Don't bother posting such comments here, HN is known for having a whole bunch of Apple fanboys who will mercilessly mod down any valid criticism so that it's grayed out while fawning posts and posts critical of other companies get modded up to the sky. Notice how there is no other analysis of this news on the front page. They HAVE to feel justified about their choice and Gruber just tells them what they want to hear. There have been a few HN'ers who quit HN in disgust because of this cavaliier
I agree with this explanation. There is a sizable contingent of commenters on here who are just extremely negative on everything Apple. I read most of the big Apple threads and they're just overwhelmingly negative toward the company and, honestly, not very thoughtful. I think this has been a developing trend since I've been on HN. Since Gruber is coming at things from a pro-Apple, but nuanced place, I'm not at all surprised that his articles don't do well.
Oh look, it's a snarky comment on Hacker News dismissing Gruber for writing an article on the topic of Apple, without even attempting to address any of the contents of the article.
The first two paragraphs make it obvious the author hasn't a piece of apple equipment to boycott in the first place. That wasn't a well thought out opinion; it was a tech-pundit's idea of Mad-Libs.I want my page view back.
It's hard to take Gruber seriously anymore. I haven't seen anyone with such an obvious bias for Apple and disdain for anything non-Apple so 99% of what he writes about Apple is going to be sunshine and butterflies. If you aren't going to say anything controversial, why bother even listening to you? I'll just watch Apple's PR videos and be happy.
Breaking News! John Gruber Not Impressed By Apple Offering
It’s baffling to me that some people really think that Gruber never criticizes Apple, not even from a position of ignorance (“I don’t read much Gruber writes anyway but it seems to me that he hardly ever gets this close to criticizing Apple.”) but from a position of authority (“Gruber hardly ever gets this close to criticizing Apple.”).I have seen harmless headlines than the one Gruber uses for this article called “linkbait” on HN.
